Design tools for indie authors: what I use and what I've learned

I spent 30 years as a designer before I started writing fiction seriously. I worked as a designer, founded and ran design agencies, led design teams, and worked as a design consultant. I have used most of the professional design tools you can name. Freehand, Flash, the entire Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, InVision, Figma. I know what these tools can do and what they cost.
